Andy’s Remarkable Running Efforts Benefit Movember

A men’s health charity is nearly £2,500 better off thanks to colleagues at a Sheffield crane specialist and the remarkable long-distance running efforts of one of the group.

Backed by friends, family and fellow staff at Street Cranexpress, Andy Brightman attempted a gruelling 100 miles run from Whitby to Sheffield to raise funds in support of Movember. Along with about a dozen colleagues, the father-of-one from Wincobank, Sheffield, not only grew a moustache as part of Movember but also took on the long-distance challenge.

After mile 50, Andy was reduced to a combination of running and walking as he began to reach his physical limit. Weather conditions were not good and the associated dangers of running in the dark became apparent forcing him to abandon his efforts at mile 70 at Sherburn-in-Elmet.

“I was prepared for it being painful, but I’d not fully considered the mental aspect. Running countless unlit and unpaved roads connecting the villages and towns of North Yorkshire after dark was particularly challenging. Seeing road signs informing me that the next village was 10 more miles of seemingly identical hedgerows and a dark abyss in front of me almost broke me on a couple of occasions,” said Andy

“I’m gutted not to have reached the 100 miles I set out to do and that will bother me for some time. However, I’m satisfied that on the day, I’d reached my absolute limit physically and emotionally.

“I had done a few runs before but never anything like this,” added Andy, aged 37, part of the safety, health, environment and quality team at the firm which he joined four years ago. “It’s the single most lonely and humbling experience I’ve ever had and I’m sure I’ll be able to look back on it fondly once my legs aren’t quite so sore and I’ve stopped discovering new blisters

“I’m also over the moon that the team of Mo Bros and Mo Sistas at SCE Ltd have reached almost £2,500 in donations for Movember as I type this. You guys rock. To everyone that donated, we owe you such a massive thank you.”

As a family firm, based in Tyler Street, Wincobank, SCE like to support local charitable organisations such as Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice at North Anston. SCE Marketing Coordinator Rejoice Chikosi said:

“This is a great achievement by Andy and his colleagues to raise £2,480 by the SCE team. We are so proud of them.”

Movember is an annual event involving the growing of moustaches during the month of November to raise awareness of men’s health issues, such as prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and men’s mental health issues.
